TWEAK by NIC SHEFF - POCKET BOOKS Tweak is the inspirational story of Nic Sheff, who went from being a destitute drug addict to a very accomplished journalist and writer. With so many families and individuals being affected by drugs, many people will be able to identify with this writer and his experiences. Nic was recently featured on the Oprah Winfrey show along with his father, who also wrote a book about his son's addiction, aptly titled 'Beautiful Boy'. The story is shocking and hard-hitting, but delivers a definite message about how the use of drugs leads you on a path of destruction, with recovery being very slow and difficult. He paints an extraordinary portrait for us, of a person at odds with his past, with his family, with his substances and with himself. It is a harrowing portrait, but not one without hope. BEAUTIFUL BOY by DAVID SHEFF - SIMON AND SCHUSTER David Sheff's story is a first. He tells of his son's addiction to methamphetamine from a parent's perspective. Sheff's son, Nic, went from being a varsity athlete, honor student and award-winning journalist to a trembling wraith, who lied repeatedly, stole money from his 8 year old brother and lived on the streets. Sheff goes through all the stages as an addict's parent – what happened to my beautiful boy, to our family? What did I do wrong? He describes his emotions through the 3am phone calls, the denial and the stints in rehab. His preoccupation with Nic became an addiction in itself, and the obsessive worry and stress took a tremendous toll on him and his family. He refused to give up on his son and researched every avenue of treatment that might help his son recover. The book encourages us, that whatever an addict's fate, the rest of the family should care for one another too, or they fall prey to becoming addicted to the addiction. A very inspiring read. THE LOST AND FOUND MONKEY by REBEKAH-BREEZE JOHNSON This is the first book by P.E.'s youngest in-print author and is a wonderful children's story. This amazing book has been written and illustrated by Rebekah who is only aged 7! The story is about a baby monkey who goes on an adventure in the forest. While on his journey, the monkey meets up with many other interesting animals, but in the end is found by his mother and all ends well. For the monkey it is an adventure that he will never forget and for children it is a lovely bedtime read.
