When I was in Grade 11, a nurse from CANSA visited our school and spoke solemnly to all the girls. “One out of every 3 of you sitting here today will have cancer as an adult.” Whether that was the best strategy to employ, I would not be able to say. Neither would I know whether that was true back in 1979, but those words stayed with me all my life, haunting me and true enough, one of the girls sitting close to me on that ominous morning developed breast cancer. The list of fathers, sisters, and close friends that were diagnosed with cancer grew with every year. Breast Cancer is a reality, but if detected early enough, it is treatable. Unfortunately, due to ignorance and a lack of information and awareness, many South African women die of breast cancer, when they could have been successfully treated. For this reason, it is imperative to communicate the positive messages of survival, to women around the country in a unique way. It is with this challenge in mind that the Temptations Journey of Hope Breast Cancer Ride was born. The Temptations Journey of Hope Breast Cancer Ride has a powerful message of hope – encouraging women in an upbeat, positive and unique manner, in both urban and rural communities across South Africa. How do you capture a life within the confines of a single page? How do you describe the journey of being diagnosed with breast cancer, through a mastectomy, sometimes another one, and then coming out on the other side clean, healed, a new (but forever changed) individual? How, after all of that, do you look life square in the face and say “bring it on”, once again? How do you embrace life and all it offers after being given a second chance?” With this in mind 12 women, all breast cancer survivors, embarked on a journey. The driving force (quite literally) behind the journey is 12 incredibly dynamic women who have all walked the road of breast cancer, and survived. Their stories alone should suffice to inspire any woman going through the challenge that there is hope, there is support, and best of all, in the form of these 12 women, there is PROOF! The 12 women come from diverse backgrounds. They come from different ethnic groupings, because cancer does not discriminate, but despite the hurdles in their various paths, their message is a universal one – HOPE springs eternal!
