In the northern hemisphere, December is a time of snow and winter – Paris will have to wait until June in order to enjoy summer and will never have the summery Christmas-time we love here in Nelson Mandela Bay. Karis Bailey, on the other hand, is enjoying the perfect summer dressed in Cherry Red Clothing. Carmenita Redcliffe met Karis on a wonderful summer's day, at Port Elizabeth's Shark Rock Pier, discovering what is perfect for summer 2008. Just like summer, Karis Bailey is bright and heat waves of fun. She is fresh on the local model scene and as young fashionista, offers a very individual take on what to wear this festive season. Without much to-do she has already soared to success in coveted competitions like the Weekend Post Styleforce 2008, where she achieved a top spot as second runner up. Karis, much like an unspoilt beach landscape, is untainted by the world and its surrounds. She has grown to be an inspiration to many young girls, while facing the rigors of daily life. Inspired by all she can gain and learn from life, she is highly motivated, down to earth, a hit on the runway and going places reserved only for the creative, hard working and ambitious. Karis seriously intends to travel the world very soon - today she features in people talk fashion, tomorrow the pages of magazines around the world. On the picturesque beach front in beautiful Nelson Mandela Bay, it is easy to immerse yourself in all there is to see, feel and experience this summer season. Much like the fashion season ahead of us – warming weather means more fun outdoors and longer days to enjoy its warmth on your skin. This summer the dress comes out of the cupboard with renewed vigor – the variety of shapes and colors amaze and length is not important, with designers opting for everything from very short to all the way down onto the floor! They also make friends with trousers, often worn in combination creating new evening looks. Ideally, summer is the season of extremely beautiful weather, conjuring up images of sand between your toes, the warm sun on your skin and the cool waters of our bay. Even so, one still needs to be prepared for our city's well known four-seasons-in-one-day-weather. With that in mind, our fashion team took to the beach with Karis and boutique owner Jessica Peens of Cherry Red Clothing and Accessories, to show how you can go from beach brights to dinner delight, by swapping or adding a few key fashion items. A real blast from the past revived, is plenty of ruffles in satin or chiffon and Twiggy inspired cut dresses which, teamed with skinny jeans is a match made in fashion heaven. Going from day to night can be as easy as restyling your outfit with some trendy leopard or zebra print accessories - and for those with a shoe fetish, an afternoon dress can be transformed, when paired with glamorous heels; bejeweled of course. If you are unsure however just think colour, COLOUR and more colour! For those who shy away from too much color, you don't have to be left in the dark this summer. Shades of black, white and grey still makes for any occasion, dressed up or down. The secret is to put your personality into creating your perfect look, whether you're a plain Jane or Fashion Fundi – there is something in this summer's wardrobe that will “wow!” you and express your personality perfectly. “Fashion is about who you are”, is Karis' advice. “What you wear should make you comfortable and complement your appearance, allowing you to shine. I love this summer's dresses and the short dress over trousers is just perfect for cooler coastal evenings.”
